Iconic character and his important trajectory in the world

Guido Van Rossum

Guido Van Rossum wrote the Python programming language in the late 1980s and it was developed as an open source project.

Van Rossum was born in 1956 in the Netherlands and received a master's degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Amsterdam in 1982. This opened the door to several jobs that he held for several years, at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatics (CWI) in the same city, where he created Python as a successor to the ABC Language.

Subsequently, he collaborated with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Maryland and the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI) in Virginia.

In 1999 and during his time at CNRI, Guido launched an initiative called Computer Programming for Everybody Computer Pro (CP4E), whose purpose was to make more and more people at a basic programming level.

Since 2005, Guido was hired by Google and now spends 50% of his time working on Python.

His first project as a Google engineer was an internal web application for code review, aimed at finding and fixing overlooked bugs in the early stages of development and maintaining the quality of the software they generate. The application was named Mondrian after one of van Rossum's favorite Dutch painters and became popular as part of the company's infrastructure.

Also, Guido developed an application that applies several of Mondrian's ideas and named it Rietveld, after Gerrit Rietveld, a Dutch painter and designer. This application is a demonstration of using Django with App Engine and makes web-based code review available to many projects through Subversion. The public instance of the application runs on codereview.appspot.com, but companies can run their own restricted instance according to their own needs. That's why it's free software.
